1. Speaker Series Presents Sonia Manzano

Sonia Manzano speaks on KauaiCome hear Sonia Manzano, bettern known to millions of children and parents as Maria of Sesame Street, talk about the educational journey that led to her becoming a successful actress and writer.  Born in the United States of Puerto Rican descent, Ms. Manzano will share how she maneuvered her way through a bi-cultural society while including her heritage in Sesame Streets educational programming and in her childrens books.  She will reflect on troubles facing our children today and how she incorporates elements from Sesame Streets curriculum into education.

2. Adult Leadership Program Underway
The adult leadership program began its year with 18 participants and a weekend retreat on September 15, 2006 at the Kauai Beach Resort.  Bill Cathers from the Aspen Institute presented philosophies of leadership through readings by Sophocles and Martin Luther King Jr.

3. Youth Leadership, Pi`ina Hoku Retreat Kick Off
Pi`ina Hoku Youth Leadership Program, KauaiAugust 2006 – After two years of planning by Leadership Kauai alumni, Pi`ina Hoku, Leadership Kauais youth program is launched with 20 students and an unforgettable Camp Slogett weekend retreat.  Modeled after the adult leadership program, Pi`ina Hoku participants will undergo 10 months of intensive leadership skill development.  A diverse speaker schedule is planned along with education on community issues and cultural awareness.  The expected outcome is a group of young leaders with skills and desire to lead collaboratively for our islands’ future.

New Youth Program Director, Mason Chock
Mason Chock, Program DirectorThe beginning of the youth program also coincides with the hiring of Program Director, Mason Chock.  According to Executive Director, Tim Bynum, “Mason brings the right combination of skills and experience to make Pi`ina Hoku a success from the start.”  Chock is a Kamehameha and UH Manoa graduate and a former firefighter.  The owner of Kauai Team Challenge, Inc., an outdoor experiential education company specializing in team building and self development, Chock has worked in partnership with The Waipa Foundation for over three years to administer a Mentoring Children of Prisoners program.
4. Class of 2006 Graduation
The annual adult leadership program is proud to announce the graduation of our class of 2006.  On April 14th, 22 participants graduated, after a successful year of leadership development.  Former Governor of the State of Hawai`i, George Ariyoshi was the commencement speaker.

5. Community Projects

Kapa`a Skate Park Beautification Project

Pi`ina Hoku, youth leadership group will be holding a painting project for the Kapa`a Skate park on Saturday, February 3rd 2007 starting at 9am. The youth have interviewed members of the community and users of the park to determine what would be appealing to all interested parties and as well as deter vandalism. The community is welcome to join the youth group in their painting efforts. In addition to the painting project, Pi`ina Hoku is considering holding a skate contest at the improved skate park prior to their graduation from the program in April.

Kauai showing of Inconvenient TruthThe Inconvenient Truth
Leadership Kaua`i’s Global Warming community project group held a showing of “The Inconvenient Truth” 6:30 pm at The Performing Arts Theatre on December 8th. Over 400 people attended and many stayed to hear a global warming panel discussion led by Former State Representative, Brian Schatz, Apollo Kaua`i Chairperson, Ben Sullivan and County Council Member Joann Yukimura.  Stay tuned for future events!

6. General Eric Shinseki and Peter Apo Speak

Former Army Chief of Staff, General Eric Shinseki was a guest speaker at Leadership Kaua`i’s adult class on November 3rd. The adult participants were treated to more that two hours of General Shinseki’s time as he shared stories illustrating leadership challenges he had faced and the lessons he has learned during his long career.

Born on Kaua`i General Shinseki sserved as the 34th Chief of Staff of the United States Army (19992003). He is the first Asian American four-star general in U.S. history, and the first to lead one of the four military services.

Regularly in the news over the last few years he is famous for his remarks in testimony to the Senate Armed Services committee before the war in Iraq in which he said “something in the order of several hundred thousand soldiers” would probably be required for post-war Iraq. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld publicly disagreed with his estimate. Since our meeting this article appeared. Shinseki article

In December our Leadership Kaua`i program meeting in Waimea the class spent the morning with Peter Apo. Peter is a Director of the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association in Oahu and a former State legislator. Appearing for the third year at one of ourtraining days Peter speaks about the benefits of incorporating traditional Hawaiian values into our daily lives and collaborative activities with others. He serves as a consultant to the tourism and development industries sharing the concept of “values driven economic development” seeking business models that are “Pono” by achieving a balance between community, place and economic activity.

Other Leadership Kauai Program speakers in December were Chris Faye sharing a tour through plantation history and Aletha Kaohi from the West Kaua`i Technology and Visitor’s Center.
