January 2009

1. Leadership Kaua`i SpeakersWe have had a productive last quarter at Leadership Kaua`i.  A few highlights include a list of awesome speakers that have visited our programs.

In October of 2008 Leadership Kaua`i classes visited Waipa Foundation and the Waipa Ropes course in the Halelea district.  Guest speaker, Steve Morales from the Kamehameha Schools presented the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens to Pi`ina Hoku and Executive Director  of the Waipa Foundation, Stacy Sproat-Beck spent time with our adult class introducing the art of propagating and preparing kalo.

November brought us guest speaker, William Cathers, moderator from the Colorado Aspen Institute to once again deliver, “The Balance of Leadership.”  His 3 day presentation also included a presentation called “Leadership Under Pressure.”
In December we welcomed Peter Apo from the Peter Apo Company who presented Ke Ala Ka Wa Ma Mua – Ka Wa Ma Hope (The road to the future leads through the past),  Ho`okaulike – A Paradigm For Balanced Growth, Understanding “The Hawaiian Question”,  Hawai`i 2100 – Workforce Unification - Values and the Corporate Operating Culture and Universal Truths – Navigating Life From Birth To Death.

Leadership Kaua`i once again supported the January Kaua`i Baseball League fundraiser which highlighted Colorado Rockies Manager and Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, Clint Hurdle and Kaua`i’s own Tyler Yates from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Back to Top 2. Leadership Kaua`i Energy Panel DiscussionResortQuest at Makaiwa ~ January 17, 2009   Leadership Kaua`i’s January leadership program combined youth and adult Program participants for an important panel discussion concerning energy on Kaua`i. Invitations were also extended to youth participant’s parents, Leadership Kaua`i Alumni and Board of Directors, and special guests including Representative Hermina Morita and prospective Leadership Kaua`i candidates for 2010.    Maurice Kaya, Strategic Energy and Management Consultant opened the program day with his “Thoughts on an Energy Future for Kaua`i“ presentation and moderated the panel discussion. Panel participants included:

  • Adam Asquith, University of Hawai`i Sea Grant
  • Bill Cowern, CEO, Hawaiian Mahogany
  • Randy Hee, President & CEO, Kaua`i Island Utility Cooperative
  • Glenn Sato, Energy Coordinator, County of Kaua’i
  • Dr. Paul Zorner, President & CEO, Hawai`i BioEnergy

Click here to view bios of each of our panelists. Each panelist shared their background, outlook on our energy crisis both local and global and energy solutions they felt we should be investing in. Since Leadership Kaua`i’s mission includes engaging a cross section of individuals, all panelists represented differing perspectives, were encouraged to offer their insights on the unique challenges faced by the island, and how those can be turned into opportunities. Panelists answered questions such as:

  • What do you consider to be the greatest challenges in achieving your energy goals and objectives?
  • What kinds of solutions do you think should be pursued to address Kaua`i’s energy future?
  • In July of 2008, oil cost $147 a barrel, it went below $40 a barrel in December. Gasoline and electricity no longer seem to be as great a problem for many consumers. What advice would you give to government officials on continuing to pursue a sustainable energy future for Kaua`i?
  • Not all people will agree with each and every proposed energy project. How do you recommend arriving at a balanced outcome that serves the greatest good to the broadest set of communities on Kaua`i?
  • With the Island of Kauai burdened with a debt of over 200 million dollars on the power production and distribution system now in place, how do we overcome this debt and move to non fossil fuel energy production without increasing the burden of this cost to the average citizen?
  • With so many groups/companies wanting to produce some kind of sustainable energy – whether it be wind, solar, bio, hydro, etc. – what is your basis for selecting the right fit and size for KIUC?

The afternoon focused on the County Energy Sustainability Plan. Glenn Sato, Energy Coordinator and Maurice Kaya, a consultant of the team reviewed the RFP Scope of Work to help attendees understand the components of the plan and identify specific actions one can take including:

  • How the community of Kaua`i can ensure that that plan represents their hopes, desires, and long-term vision?
  • What roles LK participants and graduates can play in that plan?
  • How every person can be actively involved in the County Sustainability Energy Plan and/or helping the plan come to fruition?

It is our understanding that public input and community participation is welcome and encouraged as part of the RFP Scope of Work for the company awarded the contract, Sentech Hawai`i. The contract for this RFP is pending and has not been finalized but is expected to soon in order to begin this new plan for Kaua`i’s energy solutions.   We also provided the below additional information for our participants to prepare for this event:

We would like to express special thanks to ResortQuest at Makaiwa for hosting Leadership Kaua`i’s January programs, KIUC for sponsoring food and beverage for this event, each participating speaker for sharing their knowledge, initiatives and insights, and participants, parents, and special guests for their attendance and commitment. It was every individual’s personal involvement and dedication that made this event possible and successful.
