Adult Graduation

The year has come to an end for our adult leadership class. For their meeting in May they spent the day at Camp Sloggett, Kokee. Their morning was spent recapping and evaluating accomplishments made throughout the year. Puna Dawson joined the group for the day and shared her manao with the class. In the afternoon they had a wonderful opportunity to talk leadership issues with Mayor Bryan Baptiste. The class graduation program was held on Friday, June 15, 2007 at the Hilton Kauai Beach Resort, Jasmine ballroom. Each of the three groups in the class presented their community projects to the audience. Certificates of completion were presented to each member following the group presentations. The class also debuted Leadership Kaua’i’s alma mater, which was composed by one of the participants. The event was open to the public and had just over a hundred people in attendance. Back to Top 3. Community Projects At A GlanceEach year we have three or four community projects coordinated by our adult class. This year, we have one project that also includes our youth class, Pi`ina Hoku. The following is a brief description of our current projects:

Aukahi Life Skills. Its mission is to provide the youth of Kaua`i basic life skill resources and information to ease the transition from high-school to self-sufficiency. The project has three major areas that it will adress: work readiness, coping skills and money management. They will do this through a logo and web page design contest and a life skills fair in March to be held at Kapa`a High School. The group members include: Diane Ayre, Ginger Bray, Brenda Jose, Ron Morin, Jan Nessen and Celia Mahikoa.

Operation: Restore Polihale. As their name may suggest, this group project involves restoration and improvements at the Polihale State Park on the westside of Kaua`i. Besides the usual coat of paint to the restrooms, they plan on fixing/replacing toilets, light fixtures and sinks. They will also clear vegetation, repair BBQs etc. With guidance and some supplies from the State Parks division, their scope of work is expansive. This group consists of Nely Caberto, Dale Cua, Steven Handy, Fred Pascual, Chris Ryer, Leland Tottori, Linda Uyehara and Pi`ina Hoku (the entire youth class).
The third group will conduct a follow-up look at data from a 1960’s longitudinal study on resiliency, which was conducted on Kaua`i’s keiki. This group includes Kerith Edwards, Milo Haneburg, Shannon Ladd, Ivory McClintock, Vonn Ramos and Ken Shimonishi. Back to Top 5.
During my junior year in high school, I participated in the 2006-2007 Youth Leadership Kauai Program. My youth leadership class comprised the inaugural year for Leadership Kauai. Upon my acceptance in the program, I became a bit nervous because I knew that there were many unfamiliar faces participating in Leadership Kauai that were outside of my peer group at Kauai High School. Upon my own self analysis, I realized that I needed to reach outside of my comfort zone and participate in something that would grow me into an island leader, a participating citizen, and a thoughtful young adult. No other high school program afforded me these comprehensive opportunities. Now, nearly a year after I graduated from Leadership Kauai, I realize that the program offered everything that I sought and presented a platform for me to better understand the importance of three core concepts: Respect, Teamwork, and Responsibility.

Through the program experience, my interpretation of the word respect grew. As a 16 year old, I realized that I inadvertently narrowed my world by limiting my relationships to people who were involved in activities and sports that were close to my value set. Leadership Kauai brought a very diverse group together with the only common goal being our interest in the opportunities that this program provided. Whereas I came from a strong nuclear family with supportive parents, I realized that some of the other participants did not have as secure a base as I did, yet their unique characteristics allowed me to expand my point of view and appreciate who they are and their distinctive circumstances. Leadership Kauai required all of us to be vulnerable as we shared some of our inner most insecurities, stories, and thoughts. I recall one day on the west side where we were all asked to listen to each other as we shared experiences one person at a time. The exercise would have been difficult had we all not expanded our view of respect. From that day forward respect requires that I remain inclusive, responsive, supportive, and forever a good listener.

Teamwork was an everyday occurrence at Leadership Kauai. We were only as strong as the collective group. The benefits of understanding teamwork were best depicted in our volunteer project. Our group commitment to teamwork allowed us to take an eye sore of a facility, Kapa’a Skate Park, and recreate it into a beautiful community asset. Not one of us alone could have accomplished what we did as a group. Our efforts remain today as a useful place for the island’s youth to skateboard, and a memory for me that symbolizes the epitome of teamwork.

A requirement of Leadership Kauai participation was responsibility. We all needed to have faith in each other, knowing that our exercises and projects required our individual and collective input. Our commitment to being responsible to one another ran deep. Discussions were open and demanded that we each trust and care for each other. Exercises in responsibility were also learned in the field where we each protected and assisted each other in challenging acts that tested our commitment to one another.

Leadership Kauai’s strong impression on me made it the primary focus of my college application essay. Rather than selecting a pre-assigned topic, I chose to expound on the virtues of the program and how it provided impactful lessons that I will use throughout my life. It is not often where an enthusiastic group of youth come together to grow and solve issues. A classroom discussion in AP History or AP English does not afford the latitude that Leadership Kauai does. I believe that expression in a safe and secure environment for youth is critically needed on Kauai, and Leadership Kauai answers this calling. I will carry the lessons learned with me and seek to share the same as I move further into adulthood.

Back to Top 3. Community Projects 2008 This year members of the Pi‘ina Hoku (Stars that Rise) 2008 Youth Program committed to “Operation: Restore Polihale”, a community project that comes at a much needed time and has included cleaning of the campground and bathroom areas.

The Adult and Youth Leadership Kauai students have undergone a joint community outreach project working with Wayne Souza from the department of Parks and Recreation that will help restore Polihale Beach Park. They have worked diligently with the state to fix the road in to Polihale as well as restore water service to the area. They have completed three work days where they painted, cleaned and added fixtures to the restrooms, painted and cleared the brush around pavilions. They have recently completed their last day on May 18th, 2008 where they restored the BBQ Pits and installed vehicle barriers as well as finished the painting and fixture installation for the main restroom. They group has decided to have a yearly event where they try to upkeep their work and help maintain the beauty of Polihale State Park.

Leadership Kauai Introduces New Program On June 18th, Leadership Kaua`i will enlist 20 students, ages 16-18 years of age to begin a series of classes focused on identifying career and lifestyle directions. In partnership with the Office of Economic Development and Kaua`i Community College, Leadership Kaua`i intends to deliver a monthly class dedicated to building skills neccessary to succeed in our workforce. “We want to see our youth remain on our island and prosper. With the right direction and support we hope to mentor each student into their field of interest.” said Director of Operations, Lynn Lewis. At the completion of this career and work readiness course, students will be matched with professionals to further investigate and gain knowledge to become successful in their careers.

Call for Mentors and Internships

Leadership Kaua`i would like to identify a pool of mentors and internship opportunities for our youth participants. The youth program incorporates career direction, development and job shadowing opportunities as often as possible. With the current Alumni and leaders we’ve developed in our community, we believe it is possible to find good matches to youth career interests. Seventeen youth have recently graduated on Sunday April 26th at Gaylords in Kilohana and our Adult class is scheduled to graduate on Friday, June 20th 2008 at the Sheraton Kaua’i Resort. Mahalo for helping build a brighter future for our people and our island.

In October of 2008 Leadership Kaua`i classes visited Waipa Foundation and the Waipa Ropes course in the Halelea district. Guest speaker, Steve Morales from the Kamehameha Schools presented the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens to Pi`ina Hoku and Executive Director of the Waipa Foundation, Stacy Sproat-Beck spent time with our adult class introducing the art of propagating and preparing kalo.

November brought us guest speaker, William Cathers, moderator from the Colorado Aspen Institute to once again deliver, “The Balance of Leadership.” His 3 day presentation also included a presentation called “Leadership Under Pressure.”
In December we welcomed Peter Apo from the Peter Apo Company who presented Ke Ala Ka Wa Ma Mua – Ka Wa Ma Hope (The road to the future leads through the past), Ho`okaulike – A Paradigm For Balanced Growth, Understanding “The Hawaiian Question”, Hawai`i 2100 – Workforce Unification - Values and the Corporate Operating Culture and Universal Truths – Navigating Life From Birth To Death.

Leadership Kaua`i once again supported the January Kaua`i Baseball League fundraiser which highlighted Colorado Rockies Manager and Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, Clint Hurdle and Kaua`i’s own Tyler Yates from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Leadership Kaua`i Energy Panel DiscussionResortQuest at Makaiwa ~ January 17, 2009 Leadership Kaua`i’s January leadership program combined youth and adult Program participants for an important panel discussion concerning energy on Kaua`i. Invitations were also extended to youth participant’s parents, Leadership Kaua`i Alumni and Board of Directors, and special guests including Representative Hermina Morita and prospective Leadership Kaua`i candidates for 2010. Maurice Kaya, Strategic Energy and Management Consultant opened the program day with his “Thoughts on an Energy Future for Kaua`i“ presentation and moderated the panel discussion. Panel participants included:

Adam Asquith, University of Hawai`i Sea Grant

Bill Cowern, CEO, Hawaiian Mahogany

Randy Hee, President & CEO, Kaua`i Island Utility Cooperative

Glenn Sato, Energy Coordinator, County of Kaua’i

Dr. Paul Zorner, President & CEO, Hawai`i BioEnergy

Click here to view bios of each of our panelists. Each panelist shared their background, outlook on our energy crisis both local and global and energy solutions they felt we should be investing in. Since Leadership Kaua`i’s mission includes engaging a cross section of individuals, all panelists represented differing perspectives, were encouraged to offer their insights on the unique challenges faced by the island, and how those can be turned into opportunities. Panelists answered questions such as:

What do you consider to be the greatest challenges in achieving your energy goals and objectives?

What kinds of solutions do you think should be pursued to address Kaua`i’s energy future?

In July of 2008, oil cost $147 a barrel, it went below $40 a barrel in December. Gasoline and electricity no longer seem to be as great a problem for many consumers. What advice would you give to government officials on continuing to pursue a sustainable energy future for Kaua`i?

Not all people will agree with each and every proposed energy project. How do you recommend arriving at a balanced outcome that serves the greatest good to the broadest set of communities on Kaua`i?

With the Island of Kauai burdened with a debt of over 200 million dollars on the power production and distribution system now in place, how do we overcome this debt and move to non fossil fuel energy production without increasing the burden of this cost to the average citizen?

With so many groups/companies wanting to produce some kind of sustainable energy – whether it be wind, solar, bio, hydro, etc. – what is your basis for selecting the right fit and size for KIUC?

The afternoon focused on the County Energy Sustainability Plan. Glenn Sato, Energy Coordinator and Maurice Kaya, a consultant of the team reviewed the RFP Scope of Work to help attendees understand the components of the plan and identify specific actions one can take including:

How the community of Kaua`i can ensure that that plan represents their hopes, desires, and long-term vision?

What roles LK participants and graduates can play in that plan?

How every person can be actively involved in the County Sustainability Energy Plan and/or helping the plan come to fruition?

It is our understanding that public input and community participation is welcome and encouraged as part of the RFP Scope of Work for the company awarded the contract, Sentech Hawai`i. The contract for this RFP is pending and has not been finalized but is expected to soon in order to begin this new plan for Kaua`i’s energy solutions. We also provided the below additional information for our participants to prepare for this event:

We would like to express special thanks to ResortQuest at Makaiwa for hosting Leadership Kaua`i’s January programs, KIUC for sponsoring food and beverage for this event, each participating speaker for sharing their knowledge, initiatives and insights, and participants, parents, and special guests for their attendance and commitment. It was every individual’s personal involvement and dedication that made this event possible and successful. We were able to embrace themes of individual commitment to strive towards common vision and help to foster the emergence of enlightened leadership. Back to Top 3.
One of the retreat days at the Waipa Foundation fronting Hanalei Bay, Noland Conjugacion and Frank Palakiko Yagodich taught students how to use their innate extra sensory systems to build sensitivity to their environment, each other and the needs of the collective through the Native Tracking Project. This interactive presentation covered the diversity of cultures that we are all connected with, as people of the planet.

The participants were surprised with guest speaker Lt. Governor Duke Aiona who shared some of his leadership experiences, inspiring them as they embark on their journey with Leadership Kaua`i.

Leadership Kaua`i is also pleased to announce the launch of its fourth Pi`ina Hoku Youth Leadership Program year, kicking it off with an opening weekend retreat from August 21-23, 2009 at Camp Sloggett in Koke`e. The cross-section of 20 youth participants join together from public (Kaua`i High school, Kapa`a High school, Waimea High school), private (Island school) and even home school backgrounds.

During the retreat, youth participants engaged in a stewardship project to help eradicate invasive kahili ginger growing in Koke`e. As a group, they have elected to collaborate on “KEEP” standing for Kaua`i Energy Education Project as their yearlong community service project. The project will have three components including an energy school survey, an energy resource Website (www.keeproject.org) and personal energy analysis conducted by each Pi`ina Hoku student. The findings of their personal energy analysis will be reported for general awareness and education on their Website.

The youth bonded throughout the weekend while learning leadership practices, self awareness, cultural awareness and team building with Leadership Kaua`i’s staff as well as having the opportunity to hear from guest speakers including Katie Cassel, Marsha Erickson, and Tim Bynum on topics such as conservation on Kaua`i, Queen Emma’s travels to Koke`e and leadership through adversity, and Kaua`i’s challenges.

As the year progresses, Leadership Kaua`i’s goals include fostering and nurturing these young adult leaders into the future with a raised awareness of the environment, sense of place, community service, career path, employment opportunities and resource networks with professionals on our island. We have found that the majority of our youth participants’ intention is to return to Kaua`i and call it their home as returning professionals entering the workforce upon their return from off island education.

Leadership Kaua`i is focused on bridging Kaua`i’s needs with local resources by fostering qualified, effective, motivated and culturally sensitive individuals who share a commitment to create a meaningful future for all. This dedicated cadre of leaders are aimed at building a healthy community while being conscious of the environment, by networking viable resources, and solidifying a prosperous future which is inclusive of everyone. The many programs that Leadership Kaua`i offers intend to fill the infrastructure of our communities, businesses and homes with people who will be responsible for expanding and balancing opportunities while laying the foundation for the future of our island.

The time is now to step up and lead in a direction that we build bridges to each other, collaboratively committing to positive socio-economic change and investing in a future that considers our lifestyle, values and service to the world. Our message is to spread the opportunity for individual and collective growth for a future that will benefit all.

On Thursday, May 14, 2009, at the Kaua`i Marriott Resort & Beach Club, Leadership Kaua’i hosted this event with a total of two-hundred thirty-nine (239) students from various schools on the island. Through exhibits and on-stage presentations, students from each of our eight in-school projects were able to share the work they accomplished over the past school year. Support from more than twenty organizations who represented industries of food & agriculture, health & wellness, high technology, renewable energy, arts & culture and sports & recreation were on-hand at exhibit tables to network with the students and share information regarding their industry.
