Leadership Kaua`i honors Barry Posner on March 13th at the Kaua`i Sheraton Poipu Resort. Barry is an internationally renown scholar and co-author (with JIm Kouzes) of the award-winning and best-selling leadership book The Leadership Challenge. With over two million copies, the book has been described as a groundbreaking research study combining keen insights with practical applications. Translated into more than 20 foreign languages, FAST COMPANY ranked it among the top dozen books of 2012, and it is listed among The Top 100 Business Books of All Time, receiving book-of-the-year honors by the American Council of Health Care Executives and Critic's Choice Award. Leadership Kaua`i is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and inspiring Kaua`i’s future leaders. Their mission is to ensure a source of qualified and committed leaders on Kaua`i through effective leadership programs of which The Leadership Challenge's (TLC) 5 Exemplary Practices and 30 Behaviors serve as the foundational curriculum. Since the graduation of the inaugural adult class of 2005, over 173 adults and 114 youth, along with 1000 students and faculty at Kapa`a High School have received training on TLC. Today, many graduates are serving in leadership roles throughout our island communities and are guided by these principles to help create a better tomorrow for Kaua`i. Recently, Leadership Kaua`i has received funding from the Saltchuk Giving Trax program to support the expansion of the youth leadership development to the middle and high schools building on the successful program launched at Kapa'a High School. Principal Daniel Hamada acknowledges the remarkable difference in the student's behaviors and academic outcomes which he attributes to the leadership classes facilitated by LK in partnership with Kupu A'e's President Mason Chock. Also, funding was recently awarded by the Hawaii Tourism Authority Kukulu Ola: Living Hawaiian Culture Program in partnership with Na Kalai Wa'a 'O Kaua'i Namahoe. The goal is to create opportunities for cross-generational learning about the role of Polynesian voyagers and their impact and relevancy to contemporary society; also, to build leadership curriculum and networks and community support for Kaua'i's Polynesian canoe Namahoe. The Namahoe is destined to be a floating classroom for Kaua`i's youth, residents and visitors. More exciting projects for Leadership Kaua`i include the revival of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Camp at Kokee's CCC grounds on February 27-March 1st; the upcoming Connect 5 Youth Leadership Camp for middle schoolers on April 17-18 th ; and the graduation of the current adult class 2015 on June 12th. The next adult class begins in August 2015. Join us on Friday, March 13th from 5pm to 7pm at the Kaua`i Sheraton Poipu Resort Ocean Courtyard to honor Barry Posner for his contributions to Kaua'i. This evening is also an opportunity to raise scholarship funds for future programs. For more information call 808-246-8727 or visit www.leadershipkauai.org.
